life and the frenetic city.
The Amadriade Agriturismo is an ancient
agricultural building all made of solid stone in the
early 1800’s. It has been completely restored
to provide all modern comforts whilst maintaining its
original structure and charm.
It was recently (in 2004-5) divided
into 4 apartments plus one where the owners live. They
are always at your complete disposal for any questions,
suggestions or curiosities and being new to the job
are very anxious to please. Each apartment can sleep
from 2 to 4 people comfortably. They are completely
furnished in traditional Tuscan country style with wood
beamed ceilings, antique chestnut furniture, built in
kitchen units, cast-iron bed frames and colorful bathrooms.
The
apartments combine a traditional rustic atmosphere with
all the modern comforts: Satellite TV, cook top and
oven, air-conditioning and hydro massage showers.
Mirco and Silvia (the owners who also
live on the property and manage it) are especially proud
of the Amadriade Agriturismo is its excellent IGP (denomination
of controlled origin) Extra Virgin Olive Oil which is
harvested from the olive groves on the nearby hills,
milled, bottled and sold. At the Amadriade Agriturismo
it is possible to spend entire vacations or simple weekends
immersed in a completely uncontaminated environment
that was once abandoned by the local farmers, rediscovered
and brought back to life.
Food lovers will not be disappointed
as there are several excellent Restaurants nearby specializing
in traditional Tuscan cuisine that we would be glad
to recommend. Whether soaking up the Tuscan sun by the
pool, strolling through beautiful olive groves Amadriade

HISTORY: The name
“Amadriade” derives from the Greek word
HAMADRYAS-ADOS: HAMA=together; DRYAS=oak.
According to the antic Greek religion
the “Amadriade” were nymphs that lived in
oak trees. The Agriturismo gets is name by the surrounding
wood of oak trees, a species which found fertile land
and was able grow and spread without the help of man.
According to ancient legend every oak tree was inhabited
by an Amadriade, an oak nymph with divine power who
was born with the oak tree and protected it. Since the
oak nymph died when the sacred tree was cut down, often
the culprit was punished by the gods.
Oak
nymphs were imagined to be beautiful young girls fond
of music and dance. Although they were not immortal
they had the gift of long life. They were much like
the fairies of our popular tradition, figures familiar
to man’s imagination from which worshipping would
bring good fortune. Oak nymphs were often represented
as the passionate companions of the male spirits of
nature such as Pan, Safiri, Priapo, and the gods of
Olympus: Zeus and Apollo.
