On top of a hill 6 km from Castellina
in Chianti is Agriturismo Barberino. The quiet location
and open views of the countryside make it the ideal
setting for a relaxing holiday  but it is also perfect
for daytrips to famous art cities such as Florence and
Siena both only 30 minutes away.
The
old farm of the Agriturismo Barberino is located in
the heart of Chianti about 485 metres above sea level.
The property is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves,
orchards and woods.
The Agriturismo Barberino property
consists of the villa (where the owner lives) and a
beautiful barn, both built in stone in 1765 on the ruins
of the old Spedale dei Pellegrini (Pilgrim’s hostel)
which was a meeting place for travelers and farm laborers.
The old barn, dating from the 18th
century, has been recently restored and comfortably
furnished.
ACCOMODATION: The
Agriturismo Barberino has been divided in two apartments
with independent entrances and parking spaces, independent
heating and satellite television. Both apartments are
surrounded by splendid private gardens (equipped with
garden furniture) from which you can enjoy a striking
view over the hills and  valleys of Chianti. A barbecue
is available for the use of the guests.
Please note that there is no telephone in the apartments
but good cell phone reception.

THE GARDEN AND SURROUNDING
ENVIRONMENT: Thanks to the garden lighting
you can also use the swimming pool at night. Barbecue
and table-tennis are available to guests. Pets are accepted
upon request. The swimming pool (6m x 12m), equipped
with hydro massage, is surrounded by a sun-deck and
ample green space with olive trees and old stone walls.
The shower is equipped with a solar panel. Deck chairs
and umbrellas are available for the use of the guests.
 From here you can admire an unforgettable sunset.
To reach the property there are 800
meters of gravel road and the car park is right outside
the gate of the garden.
LOCATION: Agriturismo Barberino positioned between the mediaeval
villages of San Donato (3 km) and Castellina (6 km), in
the heart of the Chianti Classico area. It is only 30
minutes from Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni,
Greve in Chianti,Certaldo. The nearest airport is Florence
40 minutes by car. Pisa airport is 1hour and Rome 3
hours.
HISTORY: In 1495
the farm of Agriturismo Barberino was given as dowry
by Anton Maria Gherardini to his daughter Lisa, who
married Francesco Bartolomeo del Giocondo - Mona Lisa’s
famous portrait “la Gioconda”, by Leonardo
da  Vinci, is kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
In 1905 the Marquise Roti refined
the villa, adding pietra serena framed double arched
windows, and frescoes on some of the wood-beamed ceilings.
OTHER
FACILITIES AVAILABLE NEAR BY: In the village
of San Donato, only 3km away, there are some grocery
stores, a supermarket, a pharmacy, doctors, two banks,
a Post Office, a petrol station, Bus stop, wine shops
where you can taste the famous Chianti Classico wines,
and a museum of country culture. In the Romanesque Pieve
di San Donato you can admire the baptismal font in glazed
earthenware by Giovanni della Robbia. Both San Donato
and Castellina have several excellent restaurants, taverns,
and inns.
The train station is in Poggibonsi (13 km).
In the neighborhood you'll find a
tennis court (3 km), a golf course,  fishing, and horse
riding (3 km), hiking, designer out let shopping. Available
to rent in the property are mountain-bikes, the gentle
hills around are full of shady lanes, perfect for cycling
or trekking.
Please note: This property does not
have air conditioning. Air conditioning is rarely necessary
in Tuscany due to the lack of humidity and the temperate
climate. Almost all of our properties at InTuscany are
in remodeled medieval or renaissance buildings. They
generally have very thick walls and high ceilings, most
are built on the tops of our gently rolling hills where
they catch the breezes that spring up at mid day and
in the evenings.
Generally air conditioning is only
found by the sea side or in the city centers where noise
and/or humidity make it necessary. We do not have air
conditioning in our offices or in any of our own homes.
