THE GARDEN AND SURROUNDING
ENVIRONMENT: The grounds are surrounded by
lovely gardens, perfect for outdoor meals. There is
a swimming pool (6 x 12 meters or about 19 ½
x 39 ½ ft.) very charmingly surrounded by beds
of sun flowers. It is furnished with umbrellas, chairs
and tables.
Agriturismo Cortona is ideal for those
who enjoy the outdoors: horse back riding, tennis, swimming,
hiking and shopping are all in the area; They also have
a few bicycles for the use of guests.
LOCATION: The closest
airport is Florence (less than one hour) Pisa is almost
2 hours and Rome airport is about 2 ½ hours by
car.
Agriturismo Cortona is nestled in
the foothills just below Cortona. It is perfectly located
for day trips to Florence, Siena or into Umbria. Near
by are the famous medieval cities of Montepuciano and
Perugia as well as Lago Trasimeno. One can also find
thermal baths and wonderful Etruscan ruins. In fact
Agriturismo Cortona is only a stones throw away from
an important Etruscan royal tomb dating back to the
6th century B.C.
It
is very close to town, but at the same time immersed
in the pleasant Tuscan countryside. The train station
and shops are all within easy walking distance, and
the Autostrada is only a few km away.
Agriturismo Cortona is in a strategic
position for those who want to enjoy all aspects of
tuscan culture. Great restaurants, wine, art, music,
shopping, scenic views and hiking are all easily accessible.
Il borgo is 2 miles (3km) from Cortona , 19 miles (30km)
from Arezzo, 25 miles (40km) from Siena, Perugia, or
Assisi, and very near to Lake Trasimeno, and the ancient
towns of Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino. All of
these cities make ideal day trips.
Please note: This property does not
have air conditioning. Air conditioning is rarely necessary
in Tuscany due to the lack of humidity and the temperate
climate. Almost all of our properties at InTuscany are
in remodeled medieval or renaissance buildings. They
generally have very thick walls and high ceilings, most
are built on the tops of our gently rolling hills where
they catch the breezes that spring up at mid day and
in the evenings.
Generally air conditioning is only
found by the sea side or in the city centers where noise
and/or humidity make it necessary. We do not have air
conditioning in our offices or in any of our own homes.
There is 10 meters or yards of well
maintained gravel drive to reach the villa.
GENERAL
INFORMATION ABOUT CORTONA: The city Virgilio
wanted to found from the mythical Dardano was probably
once a city fortified from the Umbri, We know that it
was ruled by the Etruscans in the 3rd century B.C. and
then the Romans. After the decline of the Roman Empire
and through the dark ages we don’t have much information.
Sold from the King of Naples to the
Florentines in 1411, during the time of the Medicis
Cortona flourished.
Constructed on a butress of Mount
S. Egidio, Cortona is encircled by strong defensive
walls, now some what eroded by the wind and the centuries.
From the city gates roads run out to the planes of the
Val di Chiana. The visitor observing this from the vantage
point of Cortona’s high walls will see one of
the widest and most harmonious panoramas of Italy: the
fertile and immense plains of the Val di Chiana sluice
to the horizon from the hills of Siena, through Monte
Amiata and Cetona. In the middle distance is the great
mirror of the Trasimeno Lago.
The city is replete with Etruscan
tombs, art and artifacts. Of great importance is the
civil architecture with its many medieval and renaissances
palaces. The numerous churches are splendid, from that
Roman-gothic of S. Agostino and S. Francesco, to the
Renaissance jewels of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Calcinaio)
and of Santa Maria Nova, to the silent church of S.
Niccolò.
Cortona
was native land of the painters Luca Signorelli and
Pietro Berrettini. Gino Severini was born in Cortona,
too. Exceptional is the pictorial patrimony of this
city of art conserved in the Diocesano museum between
which stands the "Annunciazione del Beato Angelico".
Then there are the great private villas
surrounded with magnificent parks, built by the wealthy
burgers and merchants of the city over the centuries.
Cortona is
also beautiful, apart from its panorama, art and architecture,
for the mild climate; situated half way between the
Tirrenica coast and the Adriatic one, just a few kilometers
from the border that separates Tuscany from Umbria,
Cortona is found nearly at the centre of an ideal triangle,
formed by Arezzo, Siena and Perugia, whose historical
and artistic importance are truly remarkable.
