Il Cassero is located in Lucignano,a walled small medieval village located between Arezzo and Siena, nestled in the rolling hills of Tuscany. The unique pear shaped walled city is considered a rare example of medieval architecture.
 The name "Il Cassero" is an antique word for fort or keep and so at Il Cassero one finds the 13th century tower that was the fortified keep for the village of Lucignano in times or trouble. The foundations of the villa are 10th century and the villa it's self is 16th century - rebuilt after a fire. The cellars and cantinas run under the entire village.
The atmosphere at Il Cassero is one of elegant but frayed nobility. Although the sheets and towels may be a little worn the interiors are decorated with family antiques punctuated with Etruscan relics. Many of the rooms are decorated with original fresco painting. The villa has been in the Moriani family for many generations and Sig. Moriani is an informative and able host despite his lack of English.
ACCOMMODATION: This is inexpensive accommodation and so although clean and well presented there are no mini bars, no elevators or other added luxuries, what this place has is character. Air-conditioning is unnecessary due to the high altitude of Lucignano and the massive walls and high ceilings of the villa.
 Il Cassero offers to its visitors 6 suites carefully preserved by the Moriani family. Original beamed ceilings and terra cotta tiled floors give each suite charm and exceptional atmosphere. The famous tower is surrounded by lavish gardens where guests relax and enjoy the surroundings.
All the guest suites of Il Cassero include kitchens where you can prepare your favorite dishes. Please keep in mind that the guest suites are on the third floor and there is no elevator. As the rooms are self catering, breakfast is not provided.

THE GARDEN AND SURROUNDING
ENVIRONMENT: In the courtyard of the castle is the garden which is very peaceful and green with paved areas, children’s toys and the castle’s cats in residence.
Due to the age of Il Cassero the city council would not allow a modern swimming pool inside a medieval village. Instead Sig. Moriani has built the pool on a piece of agricultural land just out side of the village. It was completed on 2002 and is located three or four minutes drive from the castle (down hill to get there but a good 15 minutes or more of uphill slog to get home!). It is completely private for the hotel guests only and is approached through two massive stone pillars with wrought iron gates.
 Paved with travertine marble it is 15 meters by 8 meters, is heated and has a hydro massage unit fitted in the shallow end. The views are marvelous, comprising unobstructed views of heavily forested rolling Tuscan hills. Around the pool are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas and underneath is a convenient changing room with bathroom. Plans are afoot for the future to also open a small snack bar.
LOCATION: Il Cassero is the perfect place to stay when touring Italy because of it's ideal location: Florence is one hour and 20 minutes, Siena only 30 minutes and Arezzo under 20.
The nearest airport is Florence (about 1 ½ hours) Rome and Pisa airports are equidistant, about 2 ¾ hours by car.
OTHER FACILITIES AVAILABLE NEAR BY: While enjoying a leisurely day in the country, visit the family owned vineyards. See the villas that have been producing wine for more than a century. Sample Tuscan wines before choosing the perfect bottle to include in your picnic.
 The villa is located directly across the road from the park in which the local children play. Out of ear shot but close enough for those with small children to make use of it. The village of Lucignano is an important one with several shops and restaurants just a short walk from the villa as well as churches and Frescoes to visit.
Explore the medieval villages near by as well, they are rich in history, spectacular architecture provides unparalleled atmosphere. National and regional parks welcome nature lovers. Hike, bicycle or stroll through nature preserves and fabulous scenery.
Please note: This property does not have air conditioning. Air conditioning is rarely necessary in Tuscany due to the lack of humidity and the temperate climate. Almost all of our properties at InTuscany are in remodeled medieval or renaissance buildings. They generally have very thick walls and high ceilings, most are built on the tops of our gently rolling hills where they catch the breezes that spring up at mid day and in the evenings.
Generally air conditioning is only found by the sea side or in the city centers where noise and/or humidity make it necessary. We do not have air conditioning in our offices or in any of our own homes.
