La Grancia is in a charming medieval
village with shops and restaurants only a few steps
away, fabulous views and a wonderful swimming pool in
the walled garden. With only three apartments, you are
ensured a tranquil and relaxing holiday.
"La
Grancia" is an estate situated in the heart of
the Sienese countryside, in a hilly area largely devoted
to the cultivation of wine & olive-oil, known as
the "Crete Senesi". The surrounding land is
interspersed with small vineyards and thick woodland.
For hundreds of years the estate has
produced the finest wine and extra virgin olive oil
using organic methods. This tradition is continued today
and it is possible to purchase these products from the
Estate Office during your stay.
The estate lands are dominated by
the Grancia, a fortified farm complex dating from the
14th century, built on the edge of the small, medieval
village of Montisi.
"La Grancia" welcomes its
guests to elegantly-furnished apartments of the highest
quality, all with panoramic views. Guests have the use
of extensive gardens and a swimming pool with views
over the valley. The estate welcomes visitors from April
to October, the minimum stay is one week.
ACCOMODATION: The Grancia of Montisi was built in the style of a small
village, around two courtyards. Guests are received
in three apartments, all elegantly furnished, with views

old carriage way, but must be carried a short distance
from the street to your accommodation.
It is also important for you to know

calls may be made from the managers office or at the

for your own mobile phone.

spring up at mid day and in the evenings.

of great historical and artistic importance. Particularly

HISTORY: In 1295
Simone dei Cacciaconti, Lord of Montisi, left his estate
in Montisi to the Hospital of St. Maria della Scala
in Siena.
In the next century the Hospital built
a small fortress with a high tower on the Western boundary
of the village. It was to be used as a "Grancia",
a granary for the storage of the produce grown on the
property.
In 1775 Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke
of Tuscany, issued an order to sell the estate of the
Hospital, including the Grancia of Montisi. It was bought
by Jacopo Mannucci Benincasa in 1778 and has remained
in the family to this day.
In
June 1944, during World War II, the beautiful fortified
tower of the Grancia was dynamited at its base and completely
destroyed. Here, you can see an etching from before
that time, showing La Grancia as it was.
