Villa Gioia is the dream made real
of Terry and his partner Marcello. A tranquil and harmonious
property, they have fastidiously restored the original
17th century farmhouse and it’s out buildings
using the best of every thing from the handmade terracotta
floor tiles to the superb Italian linens and orthopaedics
mattresses on every bed.
Each
bedroom suite and both the mini apartments are thoughtfully
furnished with good taste and with an eye for quality.
Terry and Marcello have also been careful to preserve
the integrity and traditional feel of the original architecture
without sacrificing comfort or modern convenience in
any way. Every room has screened windows and the lighting
has been carefully considered.
In the main villa there is an elegant
and sunny breakfast room with breakfast daily, lunch
is served pool side by request and dinner twice weekly
by reservation.
In his past life Marcello was a hip
hair dresser at one of the best salons in London, with
prior notice he is not adverse to providing the occasional
wash and blow dry or trim for guests who ask nicely.
ACCOMODATION:
All rooms come
with satellite television that picks up some English
stations, air conditioning, a hair dryer in every bathroom
and powerful showers with unlimited softened hot water
and roomy shower stalls. Rooms can be either made up
as Italian ‘matrimonial’ (half way between
king and queen sized) or adult sized twins. The apartments
are only available as ‘matrimonial’ and
one has a four-poster canopy bed. All beds come equipped
with a choice of pillow type, orthopaedics mattresses
and the best quality linens and covers.
Please note that the rooms do not
come equipped with a telephone although one is available
for the guests use in the office. Guests to whom this
would be important are advised to bring their cell phones
with roaming. There is good reception.
THE TWO APARTMENTS:
Are both one bedroom and have all the above plus a very
good quality pull out sofa bed for a third or fourth
guest as well as charming wood burning stoves for chilly
autumnal and winter stays. In the kitchen one can find;
designer crockery, a dishwasher, American style fridge
freezer, a British kettle, an Italian stove top coffee
maker, an American coffee maker and a toaster.
THE
GARDEN AND SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT: Marcello
and Terry have paid careful attention, not just to the
garden around the property but also to the fields beyond
which have been landscaped and planted to delight the
eye. A whole field of yellow sunflowers will delight
guests arriving in late June or Early July and the artfully
curved drive is flanked with Cyprus trees and accented
with topiary oak trees.
All around are delightfully thought
out beds of sage, lavender and roses. The pool is set
slightly away from the villa, perched above the property
with an expansive view of Olive groves on far away hills.
Please note that it is not fenced for child safety.
LOCATION: Villa Gioia
is near to Arezzo and Cortona as well as with in easy
reach of most important Tuscan places of interest including
Forlì and Perugia. Siena is about 40 minutes
by car, Arezzo 20 minutes and Florence one hour.
There
is a train station at Castiglion Fiorentino (the main
town) which has trains to both Florence (1 hour) and
Rome (2 hours), although there are express trains from
Arezzo which, for example, can take you to Rome in 1
hour 15 minutes). The nearest airport is Florence airport
(one hour away), Forlì airport is about 1 hour
and a half, Pisa airport is about 2 hours, and Rome
airport is 2 ½ hours.
OTHER FACILITIES AVAILABLE NEAR BY:
Tennis, horse riding, bike riding, hiking, wine
tasting,
fabulous dining, Renaissance and medieval art and architecture.
Please note: This property does not have air conditioning. Air conditioning is rarely necessary in Tuscany due to the lack of humidity and the temperate climate. Almost all of our properties at InTuscany are in remodeled medieval or renaissance buildings. They generally have very thick walls and high ceilings, most are built on the tops of our gently rolling hills where they catch the breezes that spring up at mid day and in the evenings.
Generally air conditioning is only found by the sea side or in the city centers where noise and/or humidity make it necessary. We do not have air conditioning in our offices or in any of our own homes.
