San Michele, in the historical heart of Cortona, is
an elegantly modernized Renaissance palace that in the
18th century housed the Etruscan Academy.
Cleverly restored the hotel has 50
rooms, each with something that makes it special and
unique. Some rooms have roof windows, gazing over tumbles
of terracotta tiles, others a mezzanine floor typical
of historical buildings. Still others have exposed wooden
beams and classic window frames.
All rooms are tastefully furnished
and come equipped with Air-Conditioning, Satellite Television,
telephone, mini bar and hairdryer. There is also a lift.
Client parking is 50 meters away and costs Euro 20 per
day, if you will need this service you should request
a car park when you make your booking, otherwise, there
is free public parking on the out skirts of the town,
but this will be a bit of a walk away. You can park
in front of the hotel to load and unload your baggage.
The
Hall on the first floor where breakfast is served has
the original wooden coffered ceiling of the 16th century.
In the Ancestral Hall on the second
floor are shown the heraldic coats-of-arms of the ancient
noble families that lived and ruled in Cortona. The
magnificent sandstone fireplace has stood witness to
many important occasions over the centuries.
The hotel also has a conference room
available to guests which can accommodate up to 30 people.
Art lovers can admire the hotel frescos.
Attributed to Massaccio's school of painting, they depict
the Madonna and saints amongst which you can find Michael
the Archangel, patron saint of Cortona up to the year
1261 and now patron saint of the nearby town Castiglion
Fiorentino.

HISTORY: The building where San Michele Hotel is, represents
a condensed history of Cortona since it has formed part
of the fortifications of the town since the 11th century.
In the 12th century it was the town
house of the noble Marquis of Monte St. Maria. Later,
in 1206, it seems to have become a public building -
the Palace of Justice for the town with the presiding
nobility as judge. It may also have been the home of
the Priors of the St. Vincent.
G. Inga describes the Palazzo of the
Marquis de Monte St. Maria in the 12th and13th century
as a rectangular building with perimeter towers and
that its present appearance is due to alterations in
the 1400's by the Baldelli family after receiving it
as a gift from the Florentine Republic around 1410.Further
structural changes were made by the Baldelli family
in the 1500's. Vestiges of the demolished towers can
be seen in two stairwells. Despite considerable changes
carried out in the 1700's, the Palace remains essentially
a 16th century building as its front façade clearly
shows.
