THE GARDEN AND SURROUNDING
ENVIRONMENT: As the house is built on a hill
it looks over the top of it’s own gardens across
to magnificent views. The garden was designed along
with the house about 300 years ago and today is a mature
and formal design of topiary hedges and large shady
trees.
The pool is in a separate garden,
in ground on three sides and has a fourth flank that
constantly over flows, blending the water with the valley
beyond. It is very private and not over looked.
LOCATION: Villa Caselunghe is 3 kilometres from Siena
as well as with easy reach of all the most important
Tuscan places of interest. It is about 45 minutes to
Florence. The nearest airport is Florence (1 hour as
it is north of the city and the villa south) followed
by Pisa (2 hours) and Rome which is about 2 ¾
hours by car.
HISTORY: The Villa
is named for it’s characteristic long shape. It
is situated in a small village called Le Tolfe which
is an antique name coming from a knight of Carlo Magno
called Tolfo Dei Gricci. In the 12th century he built
a castle and tower which are both still existing along
with the beautiful little village church, St Peterniano.
OTHER FACILITIES AVAILABLE
NEAR BY: Tennis, golf (25 kilometres away),the
beach (1 ½ hours in the car), horse riding, bike
riding, hiking, wine tasting, fabulous dining, thermal
spas, Renaissance and medieval art and architecture.
Please note: This property
does not have air conditioning. Air conditioning is
rarely necessary in Tuscany due to the lack of humidity
and the temperate climate. Almost all of our properties
at InTuscany are in remodeled medieval or renaissance
buildings. They generally have very thick walls and
high ceilings, most are built on the tops of our gently
rolling hills where they catch the breezes that spring
up at mid day and in the evenings.
Generally air conditioning
is only found by the sea side or in the city centers
where noise and/or humidity make it necessary. We do
not have air conditioning in our offices or in any of
our own homes.
